My dear Claiborne:
I was happy to get your letter, and it got the idea that maybe I’ll get to meet you this summer. I do hope that we may meet face to face even for the summer is gone. If not, I am afraid that we may never meet in this world, we could recognize one another beyond.
I have not been to see Mary lately. Now listen - when you come to Jackson, come direct to my home day or night. After crossing the river bridge turn to the right, you will strike Front St. Continue until you get to the old capitol. Then turn left. You will be on Capitol St. It is around two miles on Capitol St to my house. On Capitol going at the union depot you will pass Central Pres. Ch. and Masonic building to the right, then old black Calvary Bapt. Ch. Then begin to look on the left for big brick pillars. This is Glenmary. When you get to Glenmary St. which is dead end at Oak St. turn to left. The 2nd light from Oak St. is at my bed room window on the other side of my house. Go home from Capitol St. is a much further way to get here from the river bridge but an easy way no streets or matches. I have plenty room. If Helen is able to make the trip we’d be so glad to have her. I assume there is a difference in hospitality in our homes.
Annie, my wife, was sick a long time, but we had such a good maid for many years. But all gone. I don’t know about the Hugh or Wm. McDonalds, but all of Samuel’s children live there. Mrs. and friends and some of the descendants were along. Other visit the other sections.
Anyway, my home is always open to you. Just arrive and say “come in you may look always find things in order but they can soon be. There is always a clear way from the front door to my room. My bath is at end of the hall in my room. I have six window air conditions.
I had much pleasure nursing my garden. Much green trimming not wet or muddy but it has produced. Now it is about time me gathering vegetables.
I have a garden daily all things will spoil. I have a 3 gal. bucket and a two qt. 10 min limit my back by churning full of butter beans and peas. It is 11 o’clock at night before I get them shelled. I try in around 30 minutes daily fifty pods of okra 2 doz ears of corn, cucumbers. I am telling you this, that you may see that I am not idle. I have been in this since ‘47 but can always find something to do. I have not been able to play checkers or no not lately. But may be in a move game tonight.
Yesterday I spent in a hard day’s work at Central Miss. mostly last. Three months ago we refused to admit a Mr. Hart into the Pres. because he dressed himself on unorthodox stage Synod Judicial Comm. asked us to re-examine him, but his vote was 54 to 28 not to do so. May be you read of it in the papers.
I believe I told you that John Jr. got the honor of being appointed to spend the summer at Green Bank, W. Va. A Jr. in college and high grade required. He is having a wonderful summer.
My son-in-law John Kirkham Jr. is business manager of the Stelly Tel. It has got work in Jan here. He has set back in Washington D.C. for few days, Aug. 17. John Jr. has one extra car in W. Va. So my family are planning to leave here in two other car on Aug. 3. Annie Ferris and Annie Harris and Annie Ferris and Annie Harris will go with him. After his duties in W. Va. they will visit John Jr. They head me up but I couldn’t stand the trip. Take your vacation at that time and spend with me. I have preaching engagements for 12th & 3rd Sundays in Aug.
It is mean for me to make you try to read this, but I am so anxious to know you in person. I judge from your writing, that you have some McDonalds blood flowing through your veins. I had one wedding July 14 and two burials and three funerals that week.
I sure hope that Helen is doing fine and that you can get up this way soon. Best wishes and love, Gus
